RAMAPO'S ALLEN SELECTED FOR NCAA LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
FOR ETHNIC MINORITY MALES

Ben Allen, business and operations manager at Ramapo College, was one of 25 athletics administrators recently selected to participate in the 2001-02 NCAA Leadership Institute
for Ethnic Minority Males.  Designed as a model for current athletics administrators to
received training and acquire skill sets necessary to advance to leadership roles in
athletics, the program is the result of a recommendation from the NCAA Minority 
Opportunities and Interests Committee to address the critical shortage of senior-level
ethnic minority males involved at the campus and conference levels.

TCNJ FINISHES THIRD IN SEARS DIRECTORS CUP RACE

The College of New Jersey finished in third place in the race for the Sears Directors Cup
for the third year in a row.  The 2000-01 cup was won by Williams College.  The Lions ranked in the top five of the national competition for the sixth straight year.  TCNJ sent
14 of its 21 varsity teams to NCAA Division III championship competition, ending the
year with an overall record of 209-85-1, a .710 win percentage.

NJAC ATHLETES SWEEP ECAC PLAYERS OF THE YEAR HONORS

The NJAC member student-athletes dominated the ECAC spring sport awards, claiming player of the year honors in baseball, softball, and lacrosse.  Montclair State University
third baseman Craig Conway won for baseball; William Paterson University pitcher Diane Naugle was named for softball; The College of New Jersey's Liz O'Connor shared the
top player award in women's lacrosse; and Kean University's Rich Theesfeld was recog-
nized in men's lacrosse.

NJAC ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Montclair State University third baseman Craig Conway (Gov. Livingston HS/ Mountainside, NJ) and William Paterson University pitcher Diane Naugle (Montville HS/Montville, NJ) are the 2001 New Jersey Athletic Conference Male and Female Athletes of the Year.  Their selections were announced today at the conference’s second annual awards brunch held at the Princeton Hyatt Hotel. 

Conway, an adult fitness major, has won numerous awards this past season, capping an illustrious career on the baseball field that was highlighted by a national championship last season and a near-repeat this year.  The co-captain of the baseball team and starting third baseman the past two seasons, he was named the Montclair State University Male
Athlete of the Year, the New Jersey Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year, the ECAC
Baseball Player of the Year, theNational Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Mid-Atlantic Division III Player of the Year, and the New Jersey Baseball Coaches Association Division III Player of the Year.  He is also just the fifth player in school history to be named All-American more than once.  Conway holds the school record for hits, doubles and triples, and tied the national record for doubles last season.

 
Naugle
, a physical education major with a 3.0 GPA, excelled in field hockey and softball during her four-year career; she is the only two-sport All-American in WPU history.  As starting goalkeeper on the field hockey team, she helped lead the Pioneers to a school record most wins in a season and their first-ever NCAA tournament bid this past fall. She was rated the top goalkeeper in the mid-Atlantic region, finishing the season with a 1.29 goals against average.  On the softball diamond she earned All-American honors every
year of her college career, twice as first team and twice as second team.  The NJAC and ECAC Player of the Year, she excelled both on the mound and at the plate and was instrumental in helping the Pioneers earn a bid to the NCAA tournament, where they won the Mid-Atlantic regional.  She was the winningest pitcher in the conference with a 19-6 record, and ranked third with a 1.17 earned run average.  Naugle also ranked second in the conference with a .471 batting average, third in doubles and third in RBIs, and holds
the school record in both batting average and doubles in a season.

Special recognition was also be given to the 17 NJAC team champions; the player-,
rookie-, and coaches of the year in each championship sport; and the conference’s all-academic team.

NJAC ATHLETES RECEIVE ALL-AMERICA HONORS
AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The New Jersey Athletic Conference captured numerous All-America honors at the 
NCAA Div. III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Millikin University this past
weekend.  Rowan University sophomore Kathy Darling won the discus with a throw of 156'-3", a Lindsay Stadium record.  This is Darling's second national title, her first coming in
the javelin at last year's championships.  She also finished third in the javelin this year,
earning All-America honors.  The Rowan men's 4x100 relay team also earned All-
America honors, finishing third.  The team includes Ed Fortune, Tyree Jackson, Scott
Lipford and Clinton Tabb.  The team had the second best qualifying time in the trials.

Despite terrible weather conditions, TCNJ’s junior Erica DiStefano picked up two All-America citations on Saturday. In the high jump, where she is the 2001 NCAA Division III Indoor Track champion in the event, she finished as the national runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 5’7 ½".   DiStefano was also in action in the finals of the 100 meter hurdles, where she turned in a time of 15.05 while running into the wind and took fourth place after posting a time of 14.40 seconds in the trials.  Senior Janet Andrews also competed in the high jump for TCNJ and picked up All-America honors as well with her performance of 5’5 ¾" and finished tied for fourth place.  Freshman Beth Vesey turned in a person best effort of 9:56.06 to take eighth place in the 3,000 meters and become an All- American.  All told, TCNJ’s women’s team compiled 18 team points at the meet and took 12th place.

On the men’s side of things, senior Paul Catley became an All-American for the third time in his track career after placing fifth in the shot put on Friday night  with his mark of 16.42 meters, improving upon his personal best as well in the meet.  Sophomore Mike Polulak picked up his second All-America citation as he took eighth place in the javelin with his throw of 59.08 meters (193’ 10"). As a rookie in 2000, he took seventh place in the same event.

New Jersey City University freshman sprinter Diana Lawson concluded a superb rookie season on Saturday afternoon by earning All-America status in both the 100 and 200 meters.  In the 100-meter final, Lawson needed just 12.44 seconds for a fifth-place national finish. Lawson captured seventh overall place in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.55. 

Montclair State University junior Nick Gregorio and sophomore Tierra Hicks each earned All-American honors at the championship meet.  Gregorio placed seventh in the men's shot put as he recorded a throw of 16.31 meters (53' 6 1/4"), while Hicks placed fifth in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 62:33.

Richard Stockton College athletes also competed, with Eric Reissek placing third in the pole vault (16' 3/4") to earn All-America honors.  Kim Marino placed 14th in the inaugural women's pole vault competition (10' 6 1/4").

From Rutgers-Camden, Matt Collins finished seventh in the 400-meter intermediate
hurdles, posting a time of 53.78 in the finals. He had finished third in his heat on Thursday with a time of 53.02.

MARIETTA ELIMINATES MSU, 3-2, IN DIV. III WORLD SERIES 

The defending national champion Montclair State University Red Hawks dropped a 3-2
decision to Marietta College on Tuesday to end their run at a second consecutive 
national championship.

NJCU'S STALLWORTH, FORMER  BASKETBALL
ASSISTANT COACH, DIES SUDDENLY 

John Stallworth, the assistant men’s basketball coach at New Jersey City University from 1982-2000, died suddenly, on Friday, May 18. He was 70 years old. Stallworth was a long-time assistant for the third winningest program in Division III men's basketball
history, serving on teams that won the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship
four times, and earned trips to the Division III Final Four in 1985-86 and 1991-92.
Stallworth previously played semi-pro football and basketball in Jersey City. In 1954, he founded the Jersey City Bondsmen semi-professional team, a club that has played
continuously every year since. The former U.S. Marine during the Korean War and
holder of the Presidential Unit Citation was involved in Jersey City politics for many years, including serving as city Democratic Vice Chairman and Executive Secretary to former
Mayor Thomas F.X. Smith.

MSU BASEBALL ADVANCES, WPU SOFTBALL FALLS
IN NCAA TOURNAMENT 

Top-seeded Montclair State University advanced to the Div. III Baseball World Series after winning 4 straight in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament.  The final round will take place in Appleton, WI this coming weekend.  Meanwhile, the #6 seed William Paterson Pioneers 
fell in the final round of the Div. III Softball World Series, losing a pair of close decisions to
Muskingum (3-1) and Wheaton (5-4 in 9 innings) in Eau Claire, WI.

WPU SOFTBALL WINS NCAA EAST REGIONAL,
ADVANCES TO COLLEGE WORLD SERIES 

The #3 seed William Paterson Pioneers softball team capped a dramatic run to the Division
III World Series on Monday, defeating Cabrini College, 1-0, in the seventh and final game
of the East Regional.  They will travel to Eau Claire, WI for the final round this weekend.

NJAC DOMINATES SELECTIONS TO NJCBA DIV. II/III ALL-STAR TEAM

The NJAC claimed 11 of 12 spots on the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Div.
II/III All-Star Team.  Montclair State nearly swept the special awards. Senior third base-
man Craig Conway was selected as Player of the Year; junior Ryan Costello was named
Pitcher of the Year; Jeff Gogal was chosen Rookie Pitcher of the Year; and head coach
Norm Schoenig was voted Coach of the Year.  Rowan's Jim Gendaszek was named Fire-
man of the Year.

The first team includes Colin Renick of TCNJ (1B); Doug Scott of Rowan (2B); Nick Stine
of TCNJ (SS); Conway of MSU (3B); Chris Eickhorst of Kean (C); Bob Capaldo of TCNJ
(OF); Jack Lipari of WPU (OF); Steve Karrer of RSC (OF); Jed Rohmann of R-N (UP);
Costello of MSU (P) and Mike Virgilio of TCNJ (P).

ECAC CHAMPS CROWNED:
RAMAPO IN BASEBALL, MONTCLAIR STATE IN SOFTBALL

The NJAC earned two ECAC titles this past weekend.  Ramapo College won its first-
ever ECAC baseball championship, defeating conference rival Kean University, 9-7.  Junior
catcher Jason Valloni was named the tournament MVP.

In softball, MSU successfully defended its ECAC title, defeating Albright College, 8-2, in
the seventh game of the double elimination tournament.  Senior first baseman Kim Caruso
was voted MVP of the series.

William Paterson University will face Cabrini College in the championship game of the
NCAA East Regional Softball tournament on Monday at 11:00am at WPU.  The winner
advances as the sixth seed to the final round in Eau Claire , Wisconsin.

RUTGERS-NEWARK'S SHAVER NAMED
TO CoSIDA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

Outfielder Bill Shaver of Rutgers University-Newark has been named to the 2001
Verizon Academic All-District II College Division Baseball Team, CoSIDA announced
today. Shaver, who finished the season with a .418 batting average, hold a 3.68 GPA as
a psychology major. 

MORE ECAC HONORS FOR NJAC ATHLETES

The ECAC announced its players of the week and heading the list once again are NJAC student-athletes.  In softball it was WPU's Lauren Hertzberg as player of the week and Rowan's Julie Undercuffler as pitcher of the week; in baseball Brian Ellerson of
MSU as player of the week and TCNJ's Nick Maddalena repeating as pitcher of the
week; in women's lacrosse it was Tracy Rogalcheck of Rowan as player of the week;
and in outdoor track and field it was Rowan's Kathy Darling as field athlete of the
week.

NJAC GETS TOP SEEDS IN ECAC TOURNAMENTS

NJAC schools received the top seeds in both baseball and softball for the ECAC
tournament.  Montclair State University will host softball as the #1 seed, facing #4
Albright College in the first round on Saturday, May 12 at 10:00am.  Ramapo College
earned the third seed, and will face #2 College Misericordia at 12:00n.

Ramapo got the top seed in the baseball bracket, and will face #4 FDU-Madison at
1:00pm on Friday, May 11 in Mahwah.  Kean University is seeded third, and will meet
#2 Mount St. Mary College at 3:00pm.

WPU'S NAUGLE, ROWAN'S UNDERCUFFLER
HEAD NJAC SOFTBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

William Paterson University senior pitcher and utility player Diane Naugle (Montville HS/Montville, NJ) is the New Jersey Athletic Conference’s 2001 Player of the Year
and Rowan University sophomore pitcher Julie Undercuffler (Clearview Regional HS/Mullica Hill, NJ) is the NJAC Pitcher of the Year.

Naugle was a factor both on the mound and at the plate for the Pioneers.  Averaging
5.6 strikeouts a game with a 1.23 ERA, Naugle’s current pitching record is 13-3 as
WPU heads into the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday.  Through 36 games
she is batting .460, including 17 doubles, 6 home runs and 42 RBIs. Undercuffler led
the Profs to the NJAC title this season on the strength of a 12-2 pitching record.  She
holds a .88 ERA, averaging 4.5 strikeouts per game.

Freshman pitching sensation Sarah O’Malley (Camden Catholic HS/Westmont,
NJ)
of Rutgers University-Camden is the NJAC Rookie of the Year.  O’Malley
compiled a 12-8 record and a 1.48 ERA, leading the conference with 9.7 strikeouts per game.  She was also a factor at the plate, batting .406 for the Scarlet Raptors.

William Paterson University head coach Hallie Cohen picked up her second Coach
of the Year award in 2000-01, having been selected field hockey coach of the year in
the fall. Cohen guided the Pioneers to a 33-7 record, best in school history, a runner-
up finish in the NJAC tournament, and a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

WPU ATHLETES NAMED MOST OUTSTANDING
AT OUTDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP

William Paterson University's Kenneisha Reid (fr. P.C.T./Paterson, NJ) and Robert Hargrove (jr. Vineland/Vineland, NJ) were the Thomas Gerrity Award winners for
the Most Outstanding Female and Male Athlete respectively of the NJAC Outdoor Track
and Field Championship Meet.  Reid won the long jump (16'3 3/4", 4.97m) and triple jump (36'3", 11.05m) and was a member of two first place relays: the 4x100 (48.96) and 4x400 (4:06.91).  The 4x100 relay set a new meet record.  Hargrove took first in the 100 (10.72) and 200 meter (21.29) events.  His 200 meter time was also a conference record-breaker.

WPU GETS NCAA SOFTBALL TOURNEY BID,
JOINING NJAC AQ ROWAN

The NJAC doubled its chances for success in the NCAA softball tournament with the selection of William Paterson University for an at-large bid.  The Pioneers join
conference champion and automatic qualifier Rowan University in the race for the
national title.

William Paterson will host the regional round, which will be held Friday, May 11-Sunday, 
May 13.  The Pioneers face The College of Mount Saint Mary, while Rowan will take on
the winner of Moravian College vs. Hunter College.

NJAC CROWNS SPRING SEASON CHAMPIONS

It was spring championship weekend in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, as titles
were won in baseball, softball, and outdoor track and field.  Rowan University claimed
the softball crown on Saturday, defeating William Paterson University in the seventh and
final game of the double elimination tournament, 4-1.  Also on Saturday, The College of
New Jersey captured both the men's and women's outdoor track and field titles.  It was
the fourth consecutive conference title for the men, and ninth in a row for the women. In baseball, Montclair State University overcame The College of New Jersey, 10-2, on
Sunday.

MSU'S CONWAY, TCNJ'S VIRGILIO LEAD
2001 NJAC BASEBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

Montclair State University senior third baseman Craig Conway (Gov. Livingston HS/Mountainside, NJ) is the 2001 New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Year.  A two-time NJAC First Team All-Conference selection, Conway is currently ranked second in the conference in batting (.464) and seventh in RBIs (42, 1.20 per game).  MSU head coach Norm Schoenig is a repeat selection as Coach of the Year, guiding the Red Hawks to a 17-1 first place finish in the NJAC regular season standings and the NJAC tournament title.

Mike Virgilio (Linden HS/Linden, NJ), a senior from The College of New Jersey, is Pitcher of the Year.  Virgilio leads the conference in victories (7-0) and ranks second in ERA (1.81).  Relief Pitcher of the Year honors go to Rowan University sophomore Jim Gendaszek (Clearview Regional HS/Mantua, NJ).  In 30 innings of work Gendaszek averaged 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings and a 1.80 ERA, including 2 saves and a 4-1 record.  Rookie of the Year is Brian Murphy (Paul VI HS/Sewell, NJ) of Rutgers University-Camden.  A pitcher and outfielder, Murphy batted .401 for the season, contributing 45 RBIs and 9 home runs.

NJAC ATHLETES HONORED BY ECAC

For the fifth consecutive week, NJAC softball players were honored as athletes of the
week by the ECAC.  This time it was Melissa Geoghan (player) and Julie Undercuffler
(pitcher), Rowan University teammates, who were selected.  Also named to the ECAC
honor roll were baseball players Pat Vengenock (player of the week) from Rowan, and
Nick Maddalena (pitcher) of The College of New Jersey; and women's lacrosse players
Liz O'Connor (player) and Jen Munday (goalkeeper), both from TCNJ.


ROWAN EARNS TOP SEED IN NJAC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

Riding an 8-game winning streak into the play-offs, Rowan University (16-2 NJAC, 29-8 overall) is the top seed and site host in the 2001 New Jersey Athletic Conference softball tournament.  The Profs will meet #4 seed Montclair State University (12-6 NJAC, 28-8 overall) in the first round of the double elimination tournament on Thursday at 1:00pm.
The other first round game will feature #3 The College of New Jersey (14-4 NJAC, 21-
18 overall) facing William Paterson (15-3 NJAC, 31-5 overall) at 3:30pm. 

The second round games will be held at 11:00am, 1:30pm and 4:00pm on Friday.  The championship game will be held on Saturday at 12:00n.    Ticket prices are $5 for adults
and $2 for students, senior citizens and children. 

The winner will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III
tournament.

MONTCLAIR STATE #1 SEED IN NJAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

The defending NCAA Div. III national champion Montclair State University Red Hawks (17-1 NJAC, 27-8 overall) will enter the 2001 New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball tournament as top seed  when they meet #4 seed Ramapo College (11-7 NJAC, 25-13
overall) in the opening round this Friday evening at 4:00pm at Yogi Berra Stadium. 

The other first round game will feature #2 The College of New Jersey (13-5 NJAC, 21-
10-1 overall) versus #3 seed William Paterson University (11-6-1 NJAC, 19-9-1 overall)
in a 7:30pm start. 

The double elimination tournament will continue on Saturday with games at 11:00am, 
3:00pm and 7:00pm.  The championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00pm.  Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $2 for students, senior citizens and children.

The winner will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III
tournament.

TCNJ'S DISTEFANO WINS HIGH JUMP AT PENN RELAYS

The College of New Jerseys junior Erica DiStefano (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) became what is believed to be the first Division III athlete to win the College High Jump at the Penn Relays as she won the event on Thursday with her performance of 59 ¾".  DiStefano broke her own school record in the event and lowered her NCAA Division III qualifying performance with the effort. In March, DiStefano won the 2001 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship in the high jump (53").


MORE ECAC HONORS FOR NJAC ATHLETES

Eight New Jersey Athletic Conference student-athletes received ECAC Players of the Week honors this week.  Montclair State's  Scott Allan and Corey Hamman were named baseball player and pitcher of the week, respectively; William Paterson's Diane Naugle is softball pitcher of the week, and Stephanie Romanko of Montclair State the softball player of the week; Kathy Darling and Ed Fortune of Rowan are the outdoor track field athletes of the week; and TCNJ's Liz O'Connor and Jen Munday the lacrosse player and goalkeeper of the week, respectively.

NJAC GETS ECAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK IN BASEBALL, SOFTBALL

The New Jersey Athletic Conference landed 3 players on the ECAC Players of the Week honor roll this week.  For the third straight week, NJAC players were both player and pitcher of the week in softball.  Audrey Bowen of TCNJ took player of the week honors, while Jamie Elias of Rowan was pitcher of the week.  Bob Capaldo of TCNJ was the baseball player of the week.

NJAC DOMINATES ECAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The New Jersey Athletic Conference placed seven student-athletes on the ECAC players of the week honor roll in four different sports this past week  Representing the NJAC are:  Kathy Darling (Rowan), women's track and field; Lesley Snock (Rowan), softball player; Karen Masters (NJCU), softball pitcher; Bob Diepold (Rutgers-Camden), baseball player; Shaun Burstein (Ramapo), baseball pitcher; Tracy Rogalcheck (Rowan) women's lacrosse player; and Tiffany Trockenbrod (TCNJ), women's lacrosse goalkeeper.

TCNJ LEADS IN SEARS CUP STANDINGS

As the winter championship season comes to a close, The College of New Jersey has retaken the lead, holding a 14-point margin over four-time champion Williams College (MA), in race for the Division III Sears Directors' Cup, presented by the nation's athletics directors.  Williams, in the lead in the last set of standings, moved into second place with 583.5 points. Rounding out the top five are Wisconsin-Oshkosh, third with 509 points; Middlebury (VT), fourth with 508.5 points; and Wisconsin-Stevens Point, fifth with 481.5 points.

This is the final winter standings and includes the sports of women's and men's basketball, fencing, women's and men's ice hockey, skiing, women's and men's swimming, women's and men's indoor track and field and wrestling. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports – nine for men and nine for women. Each national champion receives 100 points. 


DELL GETS 500TH CAREER WIN

The College of New Jerseys baseball team collected a 6-2 win over Elizabethtown College on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, TCNJs 20th season Head Coach Rick Dell collected his 500th career victory. Dell is now 500-255-9 on his career as Lion baseball mentor.

WPU'S JENKINS WINS ESPN SLAM DUNK CONTEST

William Paterson University senior Horace Jenkins wears an improbable crown today,
as winner of the ESPN Slam Dunk contest held yesterday at the Men's Division I Final
Four in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  He was the only Division III player to participate (the
rest of the field consisted of Div. I players).  The contest will be shown on ESPN this
Saturday between 1:30 and 3:30pm.

NJCU'S LAWSON TO APPEAR IN SPORTS ILLUSTRATED

New Jersey City University freshman sprinter Diana Lawson will appear in the April 9
issue of Sports Illustrated, in the "Faces in the Crowd" column.  Lawson caught SI's
attention when she won the 55m. dash at the NCAA Division III championship meet,
the first Div. III woman to post a sub-seven second time.

CUNYAC DOWNS NJAC IN FIRST SENIOR ALL-STAR CHALLENGE

The City University of New York Athletic Conference won the inaugural contest of the
NJAC/CUNYAC Challenge, when their senior men's basketball team defeated the 
New Jersey Athletic Conference squad, 87-83 on Thursday evening.  Click here for

JENKINS THREE-PEATS AS ALL-ECAC METRO BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Senior guard Horace Jenkins (William Paterson University) made it three in a row for
top honors in the ECAC Metro region when he was named 2001 Player of the Year.
He is joined on the first team by junior Wade Walters (Kean University), senior B.J.
Johnson (Rowan University) and senior Jeff Harrington (New Jersey City University).
Billy Gilligan (Richard Stockton College) was named to the second team


THREE NJAC WOMEN NAMED TO
ALL-ECAC METRO BASKETBALL FIRST TEAM

NJAC women's basketball player of the year Joy Silver (Rutgers University-Camden),
Laura Buckley (The College of New Jersey) and Kathy Darling (Rowan University)
have been  named to the 2001 All-ECAC Metro Women's Basketball First Team.

MONTCLAIR STATE AND TCNJ PICKED BY NJAC COACHES
TO LEAD BASEBALL, SOFTBALL COMPETITION

The New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball and softball coaches predict a mirror
finish of Spring 2000 in the top spots of the conference this season, with the defending
national champion Montclair State University leading the baseball predictions and The
College of New Jersey heading the list of softball contenders in the NJAC pre-season
coaches’ polls.

The NJAC as a whole is expected to perform well again nationally, as evidenced by the American Baseball Coaches Association pre-season poll which ranks Montclair State #1, The
College of New Jersey #14, Rowan University #21 and William Paterson University
#24.  The conference coaches have chosen Rutgers University - Newark as the NJAC
team most likely to cause an upset on the diamond.

NJAC softball competition will have a new look, with the merging of the Blue and
White Divisions into a single league.  The Lions of TCNJ, which finished 2000 as #5 in
the nation, will be pursued by the usual suspects from the former White Division—
Rowan, William Paterson, and Montclair State—as well as former Blue Division dark
horse Richard Stockton College, all eager to claim the conference’s automatic bid to
the NCAA tournament.

NJAC TEAMS CLAIM BOTH MEN'S AND WOMEN'S
ECAC METRO BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The New Jersey City University men took a record fifth ECAC championship and the Richard Stockton College women laid claim to their first-ever ECAC title on Sunday, March 4.  Top-seeded NJCU dropped #2 seed New York University, 94-89, with
Gothic Knights senior Jeff Harrington earning MVP honors.  Richard Stockton upended NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden, 70-60.  The Ospreys' Rosina Rachuba was named tournament MVP.

NJCU'S LAWSON RACES TO ECAC TITLE IN 200 DASH

A week after winning the New Jersey Athletic Conference 55-meter and 200-meter
dashes in record time, New Jersey City University freshman Diana Lawson expanded
her collection of gold in the 200-meters when she won the 2001 Eastern Collegiate
Athletic Conference championship in the event, Saturday afternoon at the Armory in
Boston.  NCJU finished 13th of 38 schools in the team scoring.

As a capstone to its second consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference champion-
ship season, The College of New Jersey has claimed all three student-athlete women’s swimming and diving awards for 2000-01.  Sophomore Jen Sebastian  is the
Swimmer of the Year, and  freshman Kristen Simms is the Diver of the Year.  Rookie
of the Year honors go to Lauren O’Donnell.  William Paterson University head coach

WILLIAM PATERSON'S JENKINS REPEATS AS
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Senior Horace Jenkins of the NJAC champion William Paterson Pioneers is the 2000-01 conference men's basketball player of the year, an honor he has earned for an unprecedented third year in a row.  He is joined on the first team by B.J. BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS

NJCU FOOTBALL ALUM  SELECTED IN NFL EUROPE DRAFT

Simod Covington, a former standout offensive lineman at New Jersey City University was selected by the Amsterdam Admirals in the eighth round of the 2001 NFL Europe free agent draft. Covington was the 45th overall choice in the 12-round, 65-pick draft. Covington was the only Division III player selected by the ninth-year, NFL-owned league.

Covington was one of the top linemen in the New Jersey Athletic Conference in a career that spanned from 1995-1998, and was selected to the All-ECAC
First Team Offense his senior year.

RUTGERS-CAMDEN'S SILVER HEADS
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

Sophomore Joy Silver of Rutgers University-Camden is the 2000-01 NJAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year.  She led the conference in both scoring and rebounds this past season, and helped the Scarlet Raptors to a berth in the NJAC tournament.  Silver is joined on the first team by Laura Buckley (The College of New Jersey), Kathy Darling (Rowan University), Jaquanna Abdullah (Kean University) and Kelli Bakanowsky (Richard Stockton College).  Click here for the complete list of all-conference team members and award winners.

NJAC BASKETBALL, INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONS CROWNED

The College of New Jersey women won their first New Jersey Athletic Conference basketball title and the William Paterson University men successfully defeated their NJAC crown this past weekend.  Both will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Division III tournament.

The TCNJ Lions defeated Richard Stockton College, 63-46, in the women's championship on Saturday evening.  The Pioneers upended New Jersey City University, 88-72, on Friday.

TCNJ also prevailed on the track, with both the men's and women's teams claiming their fourth consecutive titles at the Armory Track and Field Center Saturday morning.  Click here for meet results and all-conference team information.

TCNJ WOMEN CAPTURE MET SWIMMING & DIVING TITLE

The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team won the 2001 Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Championship for the second consecutive year, with Rowan University finishing second.  The meet was held this past weekend at Rutgers University.  It was the sixth Met crown for the Lions under 31-year veteran head coach Brenda Campbell, who is retiring at the end of this season.

TCNJ swept the individual honors at the 3-day event.  Sophomore Jen Sebastian (Mantua, NJ) was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer; freshman Kristen Simms (Mt. Holly, NJ) was named the Most Outstanding Diver; Lauren O'Donnell (Sewell, NJ) was named the Most Outstanding Freshman; and Campbell was honored as the Met Coach of the Year.

TCNJ'S GABAGE TO APPEAR IN SPORTS ILLUSTRATED

The College of New Jersey’s sophomore midfielder Cara Gabage (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), a member of TCNJ’s 2000 NCAA Division III National Championship women’s soccer team, will appear in the February 12th issue of Sports Illustrated in the "Faces in the Crowd" section.

Gabage helped lead the Lions to their third NCAA crown in school history as she headed in the game-winning goal with just 0:03 left in regulation to defeat Tufts University, 2-1 in the championship game. The sophomore midfielder provided four game-winning goals on the season, including the lone goal to give TCNJ the 2000 New Jersey Athletic Conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAAs. She also netted back-to-back game-winners in the NCAA Regional finals and the NCAA Quarterfinals, both in triple overtime matches. For her outstanding play in the NCAA Tournament, Gabage was named to the 2000 NCAA All-Tournament Team.

SCHOOL'S FIRST FULL-TIME BASEBALL COACH

Ramapo College announced the hiring of former Hofstra University head coach Rich Martin as the school's first full-time head coach of baseball.  His record at Division I Hofstra was 245-209 over seven seasons.

TCNJ WOMEN REPEAT AS
NJAC SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONS

The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team collected their second consecutive NJAC title with a 92-7 win over Kean University Friday evening.  Lions head coach Brenda Campbell, now in her 31st season, tallied her 225th career victory as well.

STOCKTON NAMES NEWMAN AS HEAD COACH
OF WOMEN'S TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY

Gene Newman is the new head coach of women's track and field and cross country at Richard Stockton College, the first full-time coach in that position in school history. At Absegami High School he won four Atlantic County championships, two division titles and one league title in girls cross country.  Newman was named Atlantic City Press Coach of the Year in 1999.  Newman is also a national certifier for USA Track and Field and has certified over 100 courses in the region.

FLOGAITES TAKES OVER AS NJCU WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH

Ted Flogaites is the new head women's soccer coach and Amanda Cobb the assistant coach at New Jersey City University.  Flogaites replaces Kelly McCracken, who guided NJCU to a 2-15-1 record in 2000.  He comes to NJCU from Tenafly High School where he helped lead the boys program there to winning records in 1999 and 2000.

NJCU APPOINTS JETER TO HEAD FOOTBALL POSITION

Arnold F. Jeter, the current associate head football coach of the Gothic Knights has been named as the ninth head football coach in New Jersey City University history.. Jeter replaces Roy Miller, a NJCU Athletic Hall-of-Famer, who resigned on December 1 after his sixth season of his second stint at the university.

Jeter's last college head coaching job was from 1967-1974 while at Delaware State, where he guided the Hornets to the top-ranked total defense in the nation. His best season was in1970, when the Hornets finished 6-2 overall.

STALLINGS NAMED SID AT RUTGERS-NEWARK

NJAC veteran  John Stallings has been named to succeed Howard Pachasa at Rutgers University - Newark, effective immediately.  Stallings has previously served on staff at New Jersey City University and Kean University.  Pachasa leaves Rutgers-Newark after 5 years to become president of Megagraphics, his desktop publishing and website development firm.

ROBERTS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AT CORTLAND

SUNY Cortland Director of Athletics Lee Roberts will retire on December 13, at which time he will earn the designation of director emeritus of athletics.  A member of the SUNY Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame, Roberts is credited with building one of the top Division III athletic programs in the country.  SUNY Cortland is an affiliate member of the NJAC in the sport of football.

MILLER RESIGNS AS FOOTBALL COACH AT NJCU

Head football coach Roy Miller has resigned at New Jersey City University effective December 1.  Miller, the winningest football coach in NJCU history, compiled a 50-79 record during his 13 year career.

NJCU'S COBB TO APPEAR IN S-I "FACES IN THE CROWD"

New Jersey City University senior goalkeeper Amanda Cobb will appear in the December 11 issue of Sports Illustrated in the "Faces in the Crowd" column.  Cobb set two NCAA soccer marks (all divisions, men and women) this past fall:  one for most saves in a season (371) and the other for most saves in a career (1,114).

Montclair State University junior quarterback Ed Collins is the Offensive Player of the Year and senior defensive lineman Kevin Kelly is the Defensive Player of the Year for the Fall 2000 football season.  Red Hawks' head coach Rick Giancola is Coach of the Year.  The trio led Montclair State to their second straight conference championship title.  New Jersey City University players earned both first year player awards.  Freshman wide receiver Ryshaun Conover is the Offensive Rookie of the Year and Shane Smith is the Defensive Rookie of the Year.  Click here for a complete list of the all-conference team selections.

TCNJ WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM NCAA CHAMPS!

The College of New Jersey women's soccer team defeated Tufts University, 2-1, on Sunday to win the NCAA Division III national championship.  Click here for the full story.

The Rowan University men's soccer team are making their run at a national title as well.  The Profs defeated Williams College on Saturday, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals (site and opponent TBA).

Finally, the Montclair State University football team lost a 31-29 battle to Springfield College in the first round of the NCAA tournament, also on Saturday.

               WOMEN'S TENNIS ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM ANNOUNCED

The College of New Jersey senior Jennifer Crombie is the Women's Tennis Player of the Year for the fall 2000 season.  This is the second year in a row she has won this award.          TCNJ'S RUSSO COLLECTS 200TH CAREER COACHING WIN

Joe Russo, The College of New Jersey women's soccer coach, recorded his 200th career win when the Lions defeated Messiah last week in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament.

                  NJAC TEAMS ADVANCE IN NCAA, ECAC TOURNAMENTS

Here's an update of various New Jersey Athletic Conference action in the NCAA fall tournaments:
- Rowan University men's soccer team moved to the quarterfinal round with a 2-1 win over Johns Hopkins on Saturday.  They will host Williams on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7:30pm
- Richard Stockton College's men's soccer team won the ECAC Metro tournament with a 1-0 (4OT) win over Montclair State University on Sunday.
- The College of New Jersey women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 (3OT) win over Ohio Wesleyan, where they will face Trinity (TX) University.
- Montclair State University's football team will travel to Springfield College for the first round of the NCAA tournament this coming Saturday.
- The College of New Jersey's men's and women's cross country teams along with John Garton of Rowan and Randy Wetzel of Richard Stockton are headed for the national championship meet by virtue of their performances at the regional meet this past weekend at the University of Rochester.
- Richard Stockton's women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Juniata College in the second round of the NCAA tournament, while Montclair State and Kean also dropped matches in the ECAC tournament.

Rowan University junior forward Ignacio Scarella is the NJAC Offensive Player of the Year and New Jersey City University senior goalkeeper Jeff East is the NJAC Defensive Player of the Year for the Fall 2000 men's soccer season.  NJCU claimed two additional awards, with forward Mario Gomez named Rookie of the Year and Kevin East selected as Coach of the Year.  Rowan University junior defender Heath Mahoney is the recipient of the David Logar Award, given annually to a player who best displays the attributes of leadership and courage.  Click here for a complete listing of all-conference team members.

                     NJAC SCHOOLS SNAG 4 NCAA BIDS, 5 ECAC BIDS

New Jersey Athletic Conference schools step on to the regional and national stages this week as the NCAA and ECAC tournaments begin.  In field hockey, The College of New Jersey returns to the NCAA tournament to defend its 1999 title.  They will be joined in the national competition by Rowan University and William Paterson University.  Montclair State will represent the NJAC at the ECAC tournament as the #2 seed and host.  Click here for a schedule of games.

            ROWAN GETS TOP SEED IN NJAC MEN'S SOCCER TOURNEY

By virtue of a 1-0 double overtime win over New Jersey City University, Rowan University (8-1 NJAC, 18-1 overall) claimed the #1 seed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament, which begins on Tuesday.           

In first round action, #6 Rutgers University-Camden (4-5 NJAC, 14-5-1 overall) will travel to #3 seed and defending champion Richard Stockton College (6-2-1 NJAC, 13-3-3 overall) for a 7:00pm contest.  The winner takes on host and #2 seed Kean University (7-1-1 NJAC, 15-3-1 overall) for a 2:30pm contest on Thursday.  In the other match-up, #4 The College of New Jersey (5-4 NJAC, 13-6 overall) will host #5 New Jersey City University (4-3-2 NJAC, 12-5-2 overall) at 3:00pm.  The winner will travel to Rowan on Thursday night at 7:00pm.

      RICHARD STOCKTON SET TO DEFEND VOLLEYBALL TITLE

The Richard Stockton Ospreys (7-0 NJAC, 17-13 overall) and the Kean University Cougars (5-2 NJAC, 18-5 overall) are the #1 and #2 seeds respectively in the New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s volleyball tournament, which begins on Tuesday, October 31.

In first round action, #6 Rutgers University-Newark (2-5 NJAC, 5-14 overall) will travel to #3 Montclair State University (5-2 NJAC, 16-9 overall) for a 7:00pm contest.  The winner takes on host Kean for a 7:00pm contest on Thursday, November 2.  #4 Rowan University (5-2 NJAC, 21-11 overall) will host #5 William Paterson (3-4 NJAC, 14-9 overall) in the other match-up.  The winner will travel to Richard Stockton, the NJAC defending champions, next Thursday night, also at 7:00pm.  The final will be played on Saturday, November 4 at the site of the highest remaining seed (time TBA).

TCNJ EARNS TOP SEED IN NJAC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT

The College of New Jersey (8-1 NJAC, 16-1 overall) is the top seed and defending champion for the 2000 NJAC Women's Soccer Tournament which begins on Tuesday.  Both TCNJ and #2 Montclair State University will receive first round byes in the 6-team competition.  #6 Kean University will travel to #3 William Paterson University for a 4:00pm game, while #5 Rowan University heads to #4 Richard Stockton College for a 7:00pm start.  In second round action on Thursday, the winner of Kean/WPU will meet Montclair State for a 2:30pm game, and  the winner of Rowan/RSC travels to TCNJ for a 7:30pm contest.  The championship game is slated for Saturday, October 28 at the site of the highest remaining seed (time TBA).  

TCNJ'S PFLUGER EARNS 300TH FIELD HOCKEY WIN

The College of New Jersey field hockey team tallied a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon over No. 8 ranked Cortland State and in the process helped TCNJs head field hockey coach, Sharon Pfluger (Pompton Lakes, NJ) tally her 300th win in field hockey. The Lions are now 11-3 on the year, while Cortland State falls to 12-4 on the season.

Now in her 16th season at the helm of the Lions field hockey program, Pfluger has compiled a record of 300-26-5, having guided the Lions to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship seven times in her career, most recently in 1999 after the Lions went 20-0 on the season. Also the womens lacrosse coach at TCNJ, Pfluger holds a career record of 213-14-1 in 14 years with the program. She has also guided the lacrosse team to nine NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships. A 1982 graduate of The College of New Jersey, Pfluger has a combined career record of 513-40-6 at the helm of the two programs.

NJCU'S AMANDA COBB SET NCAA SOCCER SAVES RECORD

New Jersey City University senior goalkeeper Amanda Cobb (Sayreville War Memorial HS/Parlin, NJ) became the NCAA's all-time, all-divisions career saves leader in last Wednesday's loss to Rowan.  In 64 career games, she made 1,081 saves for the Gothic Knights.

PRE-SEASON MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

William Paterson University senior Horace Jenkins has been named the 2000 DIII News Preseason Men's Basketball Player of the Year.  The 6-2 senior guard led the Pioneers to a 23-4 record, the NJAC championship, and a berth in the NCAA tournament.  Averaging 21.6 ppg and 7 rpg, he was the NJAC player of the year and a first team DIII News All-American.

FOUR NJAC STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED ECAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The ECAC has selected four New Jersey Athletic Conference student-athletes as players of the week:  Azuree Schnur of Kean University (field hockey), Ed Collins of Montclair State University (football - offense), Doug Nagle of The College of New Jersey (football - defense), and Billy Eckman of Kean University (soccer - goalkeeper).

THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY WINS WOMEN'S TENNIS CROWN

The College of New Jersey Lions have won the 2000 NJAC championship.  Their 9-0 win over Montclair State University on October 4 ensured them of the title with a 4-0 record in conference competition (and a perfect 36-0 individual match record). TCNJ has now won 86 straight NJAC matches, dating back to 1982.

NJCU ANNOUNCES HOTLINE

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED FOR WOMEN NAMES 
TCNJ'S WOMEN'S ATHLETICS #2 IN DIV. III

The fall issue of Sports Illustrated for Women, which hits the newsstands on Thursday, September 7, names the top 20 schools for women athletes. SI for Women's editors have chosen The College of New Jersey as the second best Division III institution for women, taking second to Williams College. The editors used a variety of factors to develop the list of top school from championships won; varsity; club and intramural opportunities, graduation rates; financial aid and fan support. Also considered were facilities, sports-related curriculum, traditions and attitude.

In the first ever-survey last fall, TCNJ was tapped as the Best Division III college for female athletes in the 1999 survey.

BASEBALL COACH PALUMBO RESIGNS AT RAMAPO

Dan Palumbo has resigned as head coach of baseball and director of intramurals at Ramapo College.  Ray Dressler, formerly head coach at Bergen Community College from 1998-2000, has been named interim head coach for the fall season.  A national search will begin for a permanent replacement in the next few weeks.

NJCU PICKS THOR AS SID

Ira Thor will take over SID responsibilities at New Jersey City University on a part-time basis for the fall semester, effective immediately.  Thor is finishing his graduate degree at William Paterson University, and will be on board full-time for NJCU in January.

TCNJ NAMES DICHEK HEAD COACH OF TENNIS

The College of New Jersey has chosen Scott Dicheck (Califon, NJ) as its new head mens and womens tennis coach. Dicheck will replace Tricia Udicious who resigned in June after serving as the Lions head mens and womens tennis coach the past seven season. Dicheck, who served as the head mens and womens tennis coach at Allentown College (Allentown, PA) from 1996-2000.

NJAC TO HOST HAZING PANEL

Hazing in Intercollegiate Athletics will be the topic of the evening on Monday, October 2 at 7:00pm in the East Campus Auditorium of Kean University.  The New Jersey Athletic Conference will sponsor a panel discussion featuring NJ Assemblyman Stephen Corodemus, sponsor of anti-hazing legislation in the state legislature; Dr. Arnold Goldberg of The Center for Sport Psychology; and attorneys Thomas Giaimo and Ray Gill, who successfully represented an athletics hazing victim.  Also tentatively scheduled to appear is Tom Farrey, a senior writer with ESPN.com who recently authored a series on hazing in intercollege athletics.  For more information, contact NJAC commissioner Donna Ledwin at (914) 962-4194 or ledwin@njac.net.

SID CHANGES ANNOUNCED AT KEAN, STOCKTON, WILLIAM PATERSON, NJCU

The following SIDs have been named at NJAC institututions:  Jack McKiernan takes over at Kean effective August 28, replacing Eric Nutt; Chris Rollman is the new Director of Marketing and Sports Information at Richard Stockton, effective September 5.  Tracy King, formerly of NJCU, has moved on to Seton Hall, while Joe Martinelli of William Paterson announced his resignation, effective immediately.

 REIGHN NAMED INCOMING CHAIR OF NCAA DIV. III MANAGEMENT COUNCIL

Rowan University Athletic Director Joy Reighn has been elected chair of the NCAA Division III Management  Council, effective after the conclusion of the 2001 NCAA Convention in January.  She is currently the vice chair of the council and serves on numerous NCAA committees.

CULLIGAN SELECTED AS ASSOCIATE AD AT KEAN UNIVERSITY

Kim Culligan is the new associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at Kean University.  She succeeds Patricia Hannisch, who recently retired after more than 25 years as a pioneer coach and administrator at the institution.  Culligan held a similar position at St. Peter's College prior to her move to Kean.

NJAC FOOTBALL MEDIA DAY SET FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 8
