RUTGERS-NEWARK'S TRAPANI BREAKS THE
NCAA DIVISION III BASEBALL CAREER SACRIFICE MARK

SCARLET RAIDER FIRST BASEMEN POSTS RECORD-BREAKING
BUNTS IN NON-CONFERENCE WIN OVER BLOOMFIELD

Rutgers-Newark senior first baseman Brian Trapani broke the NCAA Division III career sacrifice hit record with a pair of bunts as the Scarlet Raiders topped Bloomfield, 12-5 on April 21.

Trapani tied, and then broke the record of held by Frostburg State’s Adrian Shelly (1991-94) who posted 34 sacrifice hits in a four-season career.  Freshman rightfielder Tom Csigi went from first to third on both of the sacrifices, one in the first and the other in the seventh, after reaching base on walks. Csigi also collected a single in the second and a triple in the sixth, scoring four times.

Raider junior third baseman Matt Buck went 4-for-4, driving in a run with each of his hits, and scored twice.  Freshman designated hitter Marco Iannitelli ripped a two-run triple and scored on a bobbled relay throw to cap a four-run sixth inning for the Raiders which gave them a 10-4 lead.

Freshman starter Mike Sales picked up the win five complete innings of work, getting his first win in five decisions by scattering 10 hits, striking out two, walking none and allowing two earned runs. Freshman reliever Bryant Perez closed with four innings of two-hit relief.

The Raiders won for the fourth time in a row to rise to 12-13-1 overall.
