2003 NJAC SOFTBALL ALL-STARS ANNOUNCED


WPU'S KATIE MORRIS NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR;
ROADRUNNERS EARN PITCHER, ROOKE AND COACH OF THE YEAR HONORS


William Paterson University senior shortstop Katie Morris has been named New Jersey Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Year for the 2003 season.

A second-team All-NJAC selection following both the 2001 and 2002 seasons, Morris earns the league’s top honor after starting 37 games for the Pioneers and posting a batting average of .314 with 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 19 RBI. Defensively from her shortstop position, she handled 177 chances while posting a fielding percentage of .927. Morris was a key contributor in William Paterson’s run to the 2003 NJAC Softball Championship that culminated in a 5-1 victory over Montclair State in the tournament’s title game on May 4. The Pioneers, who earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, will travel to Cortland, NY to face Elms College in a first round NCAA Regional game on May 9.


Ramapo College junior lefthander Jamie Anzaldi was named the 2003 NJAC Pitcher of the Year. A first-team All-NJAC selection in 2002 and a second-team all-conference pick in 2001, Anzaldi posted an overall record of 16-1 and an overall earned run average of 1.30 in 118.2 innings pitched. In addition, she posted a pitching record of 9-0 against NJAC competition in the regular season.

Roadrunner freshman outfielder Erica Moore was named the league’s Rookie of the Year after leading the conference in overall batting average (.427) and total hits (53). The Ramapo newcomer also led all NJAC outfielders in both batting average and on-base percentage in conference play with respective marks of .466 and .475.

Ramapo fifth-year skipper Ben Allen was selected as the 2003 NJAC Coach of the Year by his peers. With an overall coaching record of 124-62, Allen led his 2003 squad to a school-best  record of 32-5. In addition, his 2003 squad posted a perfect 18-0 record in conference play while earning an at-large bid to the NCAA National Tournament. Ramapo will begin NCAA Regional play on May 9 when the Roadrunners will host either Hunter or Muhlenberg.
