TO THE ECAC IN CAPE COD ON SEPTEMBER 30

Phil Buttafuoco, Commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, has announced that NJCU athletic director Larry Schiner has been named the 2003 ECAC Jostens Male Administrator of the Year. Schiner was presented with his award at the ECAC Fall Convention Honors Dinner presented by Jostens on Tuesday, September 30 at the Sheraton Hyannis Resort.

The ECAC Jostens Male Administrator of the Year award is presented annually to an administrator from an ECAC member school in recognition of outstanding or meritorious service to the ECAC. The award is given in conjunction with Jostens, the presenting sponsor of the ECAC Honors Dinner, and Jim Dougher, Jostens National Sports Manager and long-time friend and supporter of the ECAC.

Schiner has been a part of the New Jersey City University's athletic department for 36 years. He also recently completed his 26th year as Director of Athletics. During his tenure, Schiner has been the chief architect of unprecedented growth and improvement of the Gothic Knights' intercollegiate athletics. Schiner spearheaded the development of the new Athletic and Fitness Center; supervised the development of the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex; and served with distinction on New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), ECAC and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) committees.

After serving as men's basketball coach and assistant athletic director, Schiner assumed the duties of director of athletics in 1977. During his nine seasons as head coach, he became the winningest coach in the program's history with 133 wins while guiding two of his teams to the NCAA Basketball Tournament. He led the Gothic Knights to five post season appearances and his teams won back-to-back New Jersey State College Athletic Conference (NJSCAC) titles. He was named NJSCAC Coach of the Year twice (1968 and 1973) and was inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980.

Active both regionally and nationally, Schiner served on the NCAA Council/Division III Steering Committee and was a member of the Division III Task Force that reviewed the NCAA membership structure. He also served on various NCAA Committees including the Division III Men's Basketball Committee, the Division III Championships Committee, and the Nominating and Interpretations Committee. Currently, Schiner is a member of the Eastern Regional Football and Men's Basketball Advisory Committees. He served on the ECAC Eligibility Committee from 1987 through 1992, chairing the committee in 1991-92. He recently completed a three-year term on the ECAC Board of Directors and continues to serve on numerous ECAC committees. Schiner is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and was a member of the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA) Kickoff Classic Host Committee for the Kickoff Classic College Football game at the Meadowlands.

In 1995, Schiner was inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame as a basketball player and honored by College Athletic Administrators of New Jersey (CAANJ) with the Garden State Award for his contributions to intercollegiate athletics in the state. Schiner was awarded the All-American Football Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.

Co-founder and past president of both the CAANJ and the New Jersey Collegiate Basketball Coaches Association (NJCBCA), Schiner was instrumental in the formation of the New Jersey Athletic Conference and served as its first president from 1985 through 1987. He served as president of the NJSCAC from 1982 until the inception of the NJAC in 1985.

Schiner holds a master's degree in education and a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Maine. An All-Yankee Conference basketball player in 1960 and 1961, he established six Black Bear career records following a playing career that spanned 1958-1961.

A native of Scituate, Massachusetts, Schiner resides in Central New Jersey with his wife, Barbara, another NJCU Hall-of-Famer.
