Alice
DeFazio, the Assistant Athletic Director, Senior Women’s Administrator and
head women’s basketball coach at New Jersey City University since August
1995, has been promoted to the position of Associate Athletic
Director/Senior Women’s Administrator effective immediately, NJCU Director
of Athletics Larry Schiner has announced.
“I’m very pleased that the University granted Ms. DeFazio a promotion,
because of her dedicated service to the Athletic Department and the
institution,” said Schiner. “She is an extremely competent administrator.”
DeFazio will continue as women’s basketball coach, and will enter the 10th
season of her second stint at the University this fall. She also coached
three seasons from 1982-85. Additionally, she serves as the purchasing
coordinator for the department.
A member of the Montclair State University Athletic Hall of fame,
DeFazio finished her playing career as
her alma mater's all-time leader in both assists and steals.
In 1978, she helped the then Indians to the
first Final Four in the history of women’s college basketball. Montclair
State fell to eventual champion UCLA by just four points at Pauley
Pavilion before claiming a 90-88 overtime victory over Wayland Baptist in
the consolation game. In 1980 she was nominated for the Wade Trophy as the
top player in women’s college basketball.
At St. Anthony’s High School in Jersey
City, she earned All-Hudson County honors three times while tallying over
1,000 career points. She was inducted into the Hudson County Sports Hall
of Fame in January of 1998.
