RICHANS NAMED NEW WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH AT NJCU

ENGLAND NATIVE BECOMES 10TH HEAD COACH IN PROGRAM'S HISTORY

The New Jersey City University Department of Athletics has introduced Julian Richens as its new head women’s soccer coach, Director of Athletics Larry Schiner has announced. Richens, the tenth head coach in program history, replaces Ted Flogaites, who resigned on August 8 to accept a position as full-time head women’s soccer coach at Lambuth University, a NAIA-affiliated school in Jackson, Tennessee. Richens officially began on August 9.

A native of England, Richens has been involved in the American soccer scene for the last four years as a regional manager for ProExcel (formerly NOGA Soccer) in Jersey City. His responsibilities at ProExcel have included providing the region of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware with comprehensive soccer education, including residential academies, day camps, and year-round team training. Additionally, he has directly managed 30 staff coaches, including their education and curriculums, and has managed the region’s profitable growth. As a soccer coach with NOGA Soccer since 1998, he has served as a staff coach, summer camp director, year-round team trainer, and a staff member at the Premier and Select Camp. He has been the Director of the Premier and Select Camp since 2000. Additionally, he has been a ProExcel National Diploma Staff Coach since 2000.

“I’m very excited about the challenge that lies ahead,” said Richens. “I’ll be looking to strengthen and develop the program after the previous coach’s [Flogaites’] work. I’m under no allusions about the job that lies ahead. I know it will be tough job, but from hard work from the coaching staff and players, a successful program at NJCU can certainly be achieved.”

In the United States, Richens has served as the head coach of the Westchester Select from 2000-2001. Since 2002, Richens has also worked as the head coach of the East Brunswick (NJ) Shooting Stars MAPS (Mid-Atlantic Premier Soccer select league), one of the best select teams in the tri-state area.

On the college level, he has worked for CW Post University in Long Island as a player recruitment coach during the 2001-2002 seasons. In 2003, he was the AC Milan Camp Director at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.

He holds a UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) ‘B’ License and has been certified by the Red Cross in CPR, holding a Professional Rescuer Award/Responding to Emergencies since 1996.

"We are happy to have Julian Richens as our new women's coach,” said Kevin East, NJCU’s head men’s soccer coach and coordinator of soccer operations. “He is an enthusiastic, young coach with international experience. We believe he will be able to build upon the foundation coach Flogaites left us and take it to a higher level."

At Brunel University in Uxbridge, Middlesex, United Kingdom, he acted as the men’s head coach of the 2nd X1 reserve team from 1996-98.

A June 1999 graduate of Brunel, Richens graduated with honors, earning a BS in Sports Science. As a player during September men’s soccer from 1995-98, he starred as Brunel’s central defender (sweeper). During his tenure at Brunel, the school won the 1998 British University championship, equivalent to the British college national title.

He was born in Plymouth, England as Julian Michael Richens. He currently resides in Jersey City, NJ.
