The
College of New Jersey women’s tennis team captured the 2003 NJAC
Championship with a perfect 5-0 conference record following an 8-1
victory at home over Montclair State on October 11. In one of the most remarkable
streaks in collegiate athletics, the Lions extended their conference
winning streak and improved to 100-0 all-time in NJAC women's tennis
competition.
Since women’s tennis was introduced as a league sport in the fall of
1982, the Lions have never lost an NJAC match in a streak that has now
spanned 22 years and three different head coaches.
The streak started in 1982 with Brenda Campbell as the Lions’ head
coach. Campbell retired in 1995 with a record of 68-0 in NJAC play. From
1995 through 2000, Tricia Udicious guided the Lions to 14-0 NJAC record.
Under current head coach Scott Dicheck, TCNJ improved to 18-0 in NJAC
play with the championship clinching victory on October 11.
The victory over Montclair gave the Lions their 21st
consecutive NJAC Women’s Tennis Championship.
TCNJ captured the 2003 title by posting five conference victories in a
period of 33 days. After opening their season with a 9-0 win at Kean on
September 9, TCNJ next topped Ramapo, 9-0 on September 21. The Lions
posted a 9-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark on October 2, and defeated
previously unbeaten Richard Stockton, 9-0 on October 9. Remarkably, TCNJ
dropped only one individual match on the season as they clinched their
21st consecutive title with an 8-1 win over Montclair State on October
11.
