LIONS FINISH STRONG AT NCAA'S


TCNJ MEN & WOMEN FINISH IN TOP 12 AT 
2002 NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS;
RICCO AND SPILMAN NAMED ALL-AMERICANS


The College of New Jersey’s men’s and women’s cross country teams wrapped up their seasons by traveling to St. Olaf, Minnesota to compete in the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Lion men captured ninth place in the national championship while the TCNJ women finished 11th overall in NCAA Divsion III.

The Lions had two All-Americans at the meet as senior Nick Ricco (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) finished in 18th place overall and became an All-America for the first time in his career after posting a time of 25:43.8. Ricco, who a week earlier won the 2002 NCAA Division III Atlantic Championship meet, capped off an amazing season which saw him capture the NJAC Individual Championship while being tabbed 2002 NJAC Male Runner of the Year.

For the Lion women, sophomore Sarah Spilman (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) finished in 21st place with a time of 22:22.0, earning her All-America honors for the first time in her career.

Both TCNJ teams advanced to the National Championship via strong performances at the 2002 NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships. The TCNJ men earned the trip to Minnesota by winning the Atlantic Regional, while the Lion women punched their ticket to St. Olaf with a third place Regional finish.
