New Jersey City
University will
host a free girls’ basketball clinic for athletes aged 5-18 on February
5, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, in recognition of the 18th
annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The program, co-sponsored
by the NJCU Department of Athletics, the NJCU Women’s Center, and NJCU
Student Support Services, is open to the general public, and will be
held at the University’s Athletic and
Fitness
Center
on Culver Avenue in Jersey City.
It will be the third consecutive year that NJCU has offered a free
clinic to young female athletes in the area. This year’s NGWSD theme is
“Play Fair.”
“We have conducted similar clinics in each of the last two years, and
they have all been very well attended, and equally successful,” said
Alice DeFazio, an organizer of the event who is in her 10th
season as head women’s basketball coach at NJCU and also serves as
Associate Director of Athletics. “This is just one of many community
outreach programs we sponsor during the course of the year. However it
is unique in its own way because it gives young, female athletes the
chance to interact with female athletic role models on the college
level.”
Many student-athletes from the Gothic Knight athletic teams, including
the NJCU women’s basketball program, will be involved in the event.
Participants from the public will be able to compete in contests and
games, win prizes, and take advantage of a free opportunity to hone
their basketball skills.
