TCNJ WOMEN'S TENNIS EARNS BID TO THE
NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

SELECTION MARKS FIRST NCAA APPEARANCE FOR LIONS SINCE 2000

The College of New Jersey’s women’s tennis team earned a bid to the 2004 NCAA Division III Championships on April 26. The Lions posted a 14-2 regular-season record this year and will participate in a regional tournament, where they will face Williams College in the first round on April 30.

The bid marks the Lions’ 11th appearance in the team championships and the first since the 2000 tournament.
Williams College, the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Division III Champions and last year’s semifinalist, bring a record of 11-5 into the match-up. Match time and location have yet to be determined. These two teams met earlier in the season as the Ephs collected a 9-0 win over the Lions on March 20.

The 1986 Lions won the NCAA Division III women’s tennis championship, becoming the first team from the East region to win the team title in the history of the tournament. Since that time, the Lions have compiled a record of 4-9 in dual match competition in the NCAA’s.

Now in his fourth season with the Lions, head coach Scott Dicheck is also making his first appearance in the NCAA’s since taking over the program in the fall of 2000. Since that time, he has helped the Lions produce a
45-15 dual match record, including an 18-0 NJAC mark during that same time frame.

This past fall TCNJ collected its 100th consecutive NJAC win. Since women’s tennis was introduced as a conference sport in 1982, the Lions have won 21 consecutive NJAC championships in the sport after collecting the 2003 crown this past fall.
The Lions finished the 2004 regular-season with a 9-0 win over William Smith College.
