TCNJ'S SEMANICK AND MOLSKI NAMED TO THE 2004
CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN TEAM

SEMANICK NAMED TO NATIONAL FIRST TEAM, WHILE MOLSKI TAPPED FOR THIRD TEAM

The College of New Jersey placed two men’s track and field student-athletes on the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division Cross Country-Track National Team. Named to the All-American National First Team was senior Kevin Semanick, while junior Matt Molski was named to the National Second Team. The selection is a repeat honor for Semanick, who last year collected National Third Team honors in 2003.

Semanick is an All-American in both indoor and outdoor track and field for the Lions and has a 3.753 grade point average as a double major in both finance and statistics. Most recently, he competed as a member of TCNJ's outdoor track and field team which finished in 24th place at the 2004 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. In competing in two events for the Lions at the NCAA's, he posted a time of 53.38 in the trials of the 400 meter hurdles and finished fifth in heat, just missing the finals. He also was a part of the Lions 4x400 relay team which posted a time of 3:14.15, their best mark of the year.

In May, he took third place at 2004 ECAC Outdoor Championships in the men’s 400 meter hurdles, with an NCAA provisional time of 53.55.  At the MIT Last Chance Meet, he won the 400 meter hurdles with an NCAA qualifying time of 53.13. During his career, he helped the Lions capture the NJAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships four straight years, while also winning the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships the three years they competed at the meet (2001, 2002, and 2003).

He picked up All-America honors at the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships after helping the Lions finish sixth in the 4x400 meter relay. In 2002, he was part of the Lions All-American 4x400 relay team at the indoor NCAA championships. The following year, he helped the Lions take sixth place at the 2003 NCAA indoor championships in the 4x400 meter relay. In 2003, the Lions finished in fifth place in the team standings at the NCAA's, the highest finish ever for the program. A 2004 NCAA Division III Indoor qualifier for the Lions in the 4x100 meter relay, he helped the team take 10th place overall. He is part of the Lions’ school-record team in the shuttle hurdle relays (1:01.59) and is an All-NJAC performer in the 4x100, the 4x200, the 4x400 meter relays as well as the 400 meter hurdles. As a junior, he helped the Lions win the 2003 ECAC Indoor 4x200 meter relay, and he is a three-time competitor at the Penn Relays.

Semanick is an eight-time Dean’s List honoree and a four-time TCNJ Scholar-Athlete. He is also a member of the honor society, as well as President of TCNJ’s Amnesty International Chapter. He is a TCNJ Recreation Center supervisor and recently participated as a Special Focus Case Coordinator for Amnesty International.

Matt Molski is making his first appearance on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team and is a chemistry major at TCNJ with a 3.834 GPA. A three-time TCNJ Scholar-Athletes honoree, he earned All-America honors in 2004 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the distance medley relay, taking eighth place in 10:09.27. Molski is also part of TCNJ’s school record in the indoor distance medley (9:58.85). He also holds TCNJ’s indoor record in the one mile run (4:13.59). In addition, Molski helped the 2003 TCNJ team win indoor titles at both the NJAC and ECAC Championship meets.

At the 2004 NJAC Outdoor Championships, he captured first place in the 800 meter run. He is part of the Lions’ outdoor school-record foursome in the distance medley relay with a mark of 10:02.26, a time they posted at the 2004 Penn Relays. He also won the 2004 NJAC Indoor championship in the 1,500 meter and was part of TCNJ's first place 4x800 meter relay team. At the 2004 ECAC Division III Outdoor Championships, he took 12th in the 1,500 meter run in 4:01.10, helping his team place fourth overall.

To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point-average and starter or significant reserve on their team. CoSIDA’s cross country-track and field team is now in its second year as a separate team after previously being a sport on the At-Large ballot.  Semanick was a member of the inaugural team last year and combined with Molski’s selection as a CoSIDA Academic All-American, TCNJ has now produced 44 Academic All-Americans since the program was started 51 years ago.
