The Montclair State
University athletic department has named Karin Harvey as its new women’s volleyball head coach
effective with the 2005 season. A first-year assistant coach with the
Montclair
State
women’s basketball team, Harvey succeeds former Red Hawk volleyball coach
Sandy Lombeyda-Sanchez, who stepped down in December following 11 seasons
and 159 victories at the helm of the MSU program.
“We
are very happy to have Karin Harvey assume this new responsibility in the
athletic department,” remarked
Montclair
State
athletic director Holly Gera. “Karin has been with us this past year as
an assistant coach for the women's basketball program. She is an
excellent recruiter and has a very positive approach to teaching and
coaching student-athletes. Karin has a strong background in physical
education, fitness and coaching. We look forward to the fall volleyball
season with her as our head coach.”
A
first-year assistant coach with the MSU women’s basketball team, Harvey
helped the Red Hawks earn an ECAC Metro Championship berth this winter. She
spent the 2003-04 season at the
Connelly
School
of the Holy Child where she helped the team to a 15-6 mark and its first
basketball championship in seven years. Prior to that,
Harvey
spent two seasons at
Smith
College
where she earned her master’s degree in Exercise & Sports Studies in 2000.
Harvey
made
Massachusetts
state history in 1997 while serving as the assistant varsity boys’
basketball and freshman coach at
Northampton
High School,
and also coached the
Aquinas
College
women’s team for two seasons. She was the junior varsity coach for the
Deerfield
High School
girls’ team, and was herself a three-year volleyball varsity player at
Reed
City
High School
in her native
Michigan.
Harvey
earned her bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Health and Physical Education
in 1997 from Aquinas before obtaining her master’s from Smith three years
later.
“I am
excited about the opportunity to continue my involvement with the MSU
community and I look forward to building a highly competitive volleyball
program,” Harvey remarked.
