The New Jersey Athletic
Conference Board of Athletic Administrators recently voted to expand the
field of participants for the 2005 NJAC Championship Baseball Tournament.
The double-elimination tournament, which traditionally has featured participation by the top four regular season finishers, will now include
participation by the top six conference finishers. In addition, a new
tournament format has been adopted which will feature tournament contests
played at both campus sites and a neutral stadium site.
The 2005 NJAC Championship Baseball Tournament will get underway on
Wednesday, May 4 with three opening round games played at three different
campus sites. The first, second and third-seeded teams will host the
sixth, fifth, and fourth-seeded teams respectively in first round
afternoon contests. In the event of rain on Wednesday, May 4, first round
contests will be rescheduled for Thursday, May 5 at the same campus site
host locations. Following completion of the first round contests, the remainder
of the tournament will then shift to a neutral site with all six teams
featured in second round games on Friday, May 6. Third round contests will
be conducted on Saturday, May 7, and the 2005 NJAC Baseball Championship
Game is scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, May 8.
In a related announcement, the New Jersey Athletic Conference has reached
agreement with Campbell's Field in Camden to serve as the host site for
the tournament's second through championship rounds. Recognized the past two years by
Baseball
America as the Independent Baseball "Park of the
Year", Campbell's Field is a 6,450 seat venue that sits at the base of the Ben Franklin Bridge and
rests against the Delaware River, giving fans a picturesque view of the
Philadelphia skyline. The stadium serves as the regular season home park
of the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptor baseball team.
Tickets for all games played at Campbell's Field will be sold on a daily
basis, meaning one admission fee will admit spectators to all games played in
the stadium on that day. Tickets can be purchased at the Campbell's Field
box office beginning one hour before the first contest of each day during all
rounds of the tournament played in Camden.
Conference play in the NJAC gets underway on Thursday, March 24. The 2005
NJAC Tournament bracket will be released following the conclusion of
regular season league play on Saturday, April 30.
