Josh Schwartz broke the NCAA
Division III record for consecutive victories when he notched his 26th
straight win. Schwartz earned a 4-2 victory over York (PA) by pitching
six innings while allowing just one earned run to shatter the NCAA mark
on March 25. The previous NCAA Division III record was 25 straight games
by Dennys Gomez from William Penn (March 12, 1993-May 10,
1994). Schwartz is 2-0 on the season with an earned run average of 2.25.
In 20 innings, he has recorded a team-best 19 strikeouts.
Schwartz is one victory away from surpassing the Division I record of 26
games. The mark is shared by Wake Forest’s Kyle Sleeth (2001-03) and
Brigham Young’s Scott Nielsen (1978, 82-83). In Division II, the
consecutive pitching record is 21 by Jason Herz from Central Missouri
State (2001-2002) and Trevor Schulte from South Dakota State
(1993-1994).
During his junior year, Schwartz posted 13 straight wins. He was
selected the Mid-Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year and the New Jersey
Athletic Conference (NJAC) Pitcher of the Year, in addition to earning
first-team All-America honors. In addition, he was a member of the
All-Region, All-State and All-Conference first teams. In 2003, Schwartz
went 10-0 and he wrapped up his freshmen season by earning a 3-1 win
against Montclair State on April 29, 2002.
Schwartz has a career mark of 27-3 with a 2.16 ERA. In 242 innings
pitched, he has compiled a school record 225 strikeouts (2002-).He holds
school records for victories in a season (13, 2004), career (27, 2002-)
and consecutive (26, 2002-). In addition, Schwartz has the record for
shutouts in a career (5, 2002-) and shares the season mark (3, 2004).
