WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR


MSU'S O'BOYLE & NEWARK'S MORRIS NAMED CO-COACHES OF THE YEAR


Montclair State University junior forward Stephanie Machin has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year for the 2005-06 season.

A three-time all-conference selection, Machin was previously named NJAC Rookie of the Year in 2003-04. The Week 10 NJAC Player of the Week, she currently ranks third in the conference in scoring with an average of 13.1 points per game. She also ranks 12th in the NJAC in rebounding (6.3 per game), fourth in the league in field goal percentage (.483) and ninth in the conference in free throw percentage (.664). Machin excelled against NJAC competition, producing league-best conference-only statistics in both scoring (14.3 points per game) and field goal percentage (.527).

Kean University freshman guard Melissa Beyruti was named the 2005-06 NJAC Rookie of the Year. A four-time NJAC Rookie of the Week selection, she currently leads the conference in three-point field goals made per game (2.36). Beyruti also ranks ninth the conference in scoring (11.6 ppg), 12th in steals (2.28), and fifth in field goal percentage (.330). Her selection marks the second straight year that a Cougar has been selected as the league’s top rookie.

William Paterson junior guard Luci Custis was named NJAC Defensive Player of the Year. A two-time all-conference selection, she currently ranks ninth in the NJAC in steals (2.38) and 15th in rebounding (5.8). Custis also ranks among the league leaders in scoring (5th/12.3 per game), field goal percentage (15th/.382), free throw percentage (6th/.727), and three-point field goals made per game (13th/0.88).

Montclair State University’s Beth O’Boyle and Rutgers University-Newark’s Kevin Morris were named NJAC Co-Coaches of the Year by their peers.

O’Boyle has guided her squad to a 17-9 overall record and a second place finish in the NJAC regular season with a 14-4 conference mark. Her two-year career head coaching record at Montclair State currently stands at 32-21.

Morris has guided Rutgers-Newark to its only two NJAC Tournament appearances in school history during each of the last two seasons. In 2005-06, he has led the Scarlet Raiders to a 15-11 overall record and a 10-8 conference mark. Morris, who also serves as the Rutgers-Newark women’s tennis coach, was named NJAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year by his peers following the 2005 tennis season.
