The College of New Jersey’s
junior catcher Gerard Haran and Rowan sophomore left-hander Ryan Kulik
have been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball Player and
Pitcher of the Year respectively for the 2006 season.
Currently ranked second in the conference overall with a .422 batting
average, Haran leads the NJAC in slugging percentage (.852), on-base
percentage (.551), runs scored (56), and doubles (21). He hit .344 against
NJAC pitching and led the league in four conference-only statistical
categories including slugging percentage (.750), on-base percentage
(.511), runs scored (25) and total bases (51). A two-time all-conference
selection, Haran previously earned NJAC Rookie of the Year honors during
his freshman campaign of 2004.
Kulik’s selection as NJAC Pitcher of the Year marks the fourth consecutive
season that a Prof hurler has earned the honor, as his former teammate
Josh Schwartz captured the award in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Currently on the
season, he is 5-2 with a 3.35 earned run average and 43 strikeouts in 56.1
innings of work. In NJAC competition, Kulik was 3-1 with a 2.70 earned run
average in 33.1 innings pitched. He ranked third in conference play with
30 strikeouts, and led the league in pickoffs with four.
Rowan junior right-hander Tyler Dempsey was named the league’s Fireman of
the Year. Dempsey currently is tied for the conference lead in saves with
five on the season. Against NJAC competition, he was 1-1 with a 1.50
earned run average. He finished conference play tied for the lead in saves
(3), while ranking fourth in the league in opponent batting average
(.186).
Kean freshman designated hitter Mike Shymanski was tabbed NJAC Rookie of
the Year. A second-team all-conference selection and a three-time NJAC
Rookie of the Year pick during the season, Shymanski started all 40
regular season games for Kean, hitting .381 with nine doubles, one triple,
one home run, and 33 RBI.
William Paterson head coach Jeff Albies was named NJAC Coach of the Year
after leading the Pioneers to the top seed in the NJAC Tournament and a
share of the conference regular season championship. In 32 years at the
helm of the Pioneer program, Albies has accumulated an overall head
coaching record of 843-383-10.
