With NJCU’s
2-1 men’s soccer victory over TCNJ on October 15, Gothic Knight head
men's soccer coach Kevin East earned his 100th career
victory in only his eighth season at the helm of the NJCU program.
With 305 wins in program history, nearly one-third have occurred
during his tenure.
East became the all-time winningest men’s soccer coach at NJCU in
just the 118th game of his career on October 10,2003 when
he registered his 69th win as head coach.
He
entered the 2005 season with a record of 83-59-8. His .586 winning
percentage is the best of any men’s soccer coach in school history
with at least 50 games experience.
East originally inherited a program that had endured
eight straight losing seasons and three consecutive winless
campaigns in NJAC play. He immediately guided a 1998 squad comprised
primarily of freshmen and sophomores to a 10-7-1 record. Between
1999 and 2001, NJCU reached the NJAC Tournament in three consecutive
years, earning NJAC berths with a higher finish in the league each
year of competition.
The 2000, East was tabbed NJAC Coach of the Year in
only his third season as a head coach at the college level, as he
directed the team to a then-record-breaking season of 13-7-2. In
2001, the Knights established a school record for wins in a season
with a 17-7 mark. For the first time in school history, the Knights
advanced to the NJAC and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference
championship games before falling in each final. NJCU earned the No.
1 seed in the ECAC’s.
In 2003, the Gothic Knights qualified for both the
NJAC and ECAC Tournaments, marking the fifth straight season NJCU
saw action in either the NJAC or ECAC post-seasons. In 2004, NJCU
captured the championship of the ECAC Tournament and finished the
season with an overall record of 17-7 after competing as an
Independent.
In January 2003, East finished all requirements for
the National “A” Coaching License from the United States Soccer
Federation. The "A" license course is the highest level coaching
course in the country.
Outside of NJCU, East is active in coaching circles
on the national and state level. He is currently a representative on
the NSCAA National Rating Board. East was the head coach of the
Olympic Development Program (ODP) U-19 New Jersey state team during
the spring of 2002. He is a former vice president of the College
Soccer Association of New Jersey (CSANJ).
A
1993 graduate of Kean University with a B.A. in Political
Science/Criminal Justice, East came to NJCU after serving as an
assistant coach at his alma mater for four seasons (1993-98). |
