The College of New Jersey’s sophomore Christina Contrafatto
and freshman Haley Kutner have been named the New Jersey
Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player and Rookie of the Year
respectively for the 2005 season.
A two-time Player of the Year selection, Contrafatto went 5-0 in
dual match singles play and teamed at first doubles to post a 5-0
dual match record for the NJAC Champion Lions. In tournament play
during the fall season, she posted a 10-2 singles record and a 10-1
mark in doubles play. She earned All-American status by winning the
ITA Northeast Regional title and placing seventh at the ITA National
Championships. A two-time all-conference selection in both singles
and doubles, Contrafatto’s career singles record stands at 30-10
while her career doubles mark stands at 24-9.
An all-conference selection in singles and an NJAC Rookie of the
Week selection, Kutner earned Rookie of the Year honors after
posting a dual match singles record of 4-0 and a dual match doubles
mark of 5-0. In tournament play during the fall season, she posted a
5-1 singles record and a 4-1 doubles mark. Kutner and the Lions
captured their 23rd consecutive NJAC championship with a
perfect 5-0 conference record, extending their NJAC winning streak
to 111 consecutive matches - a streak that dates back to the start
of NJAC tennis in the fall of 1982.
Rutgers-Newark head coach Kevin Morris earned NJAC Coach of the Year
honors in a vote by his peers. In 2005, he guided the Scarlet
Raiders to a school-best 11-1 overall record and a second place
finish in the NJAC with a 4-1 conference mark. Under his leadership,
his 2005 squad improved by eight victories over the Scarlet Raider
2004 squad which posted an overall record of 3-9. Now in his third
season at the helm of the Rutgers-Newark program, Morris has posted
a career record of 16-18.
