NJCU'S BROWN NAMED NABC CO-ATLANTIC DISTRICT
COACH OF THE YEAR

GUIDED GOTHIC KNIGHTS TO NJAC NORTH DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

NJCU head men’s basketball coach Charles Brown was recently voted the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) co-Atlantic District Coach of the Year for the third time in his 25-year career.

Brown, who previously won the award in 1986 and 2004, shared the honor with Josh Loeffler, the head coach at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Brown was voted the “John K. Adams” New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career earlier this season.

Brown, in his 25th season as head coach of the Gothic Knights, guided a team that was projected to miss the NJAC Tournament in the league’s preseason poll, all the way to an 11-2 conference mark and the No. 1 overall seed in the NJAC Tournament, capturing the NJAC regular North Division championship.

He guided the Gothic Knights to the NJAC championship game before being eliminated in overtime. The club also reached the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro semifinals and finished with a 19-10 overall record.

With a career record of 483-218, Brown is the winningest coach among men or women in the history of the NJAC, both overall and in league play (300-118) and the second winningest among men’s coaches at any level in New Jersey state history. Only former Princeton University mentor Pete Carril has won more games as a New Jersey collegiate men’s coach—514 games with the Tigers from 1967-96.

In 25 seasons, Brown has averaged more than 19 wins per year, winning 20 or more on eight occasions. He has never had a losing season and has never missed the postseason. Brown has guided 12 teams to the NCAA Division III Tournament, reaching the NCAA Final Four in 1986 and 1992. When not in the NCAA’s, his clubs have still reached the ECAC Metro New York/New Jersey tournament on 13 occasions, winning five championships (1983, 1993, 1994, 2001, 2006).
