Sean Drennan has
been named the new head men’s basketball coach at Kean University after
a four-year tenure at Bergen Community College (BCC)
in Paramus. As the Cougars enter their 75th season of men’s basketball
at Kean, Drennan becomes just the 17th head coach in the program’s
history.
Over the past four seasons at BCC, Drennan compiled an 88-32 record and
captured three-straight Garden State Athletic Conference North
Championships at the two-year school. In addition, Drennan guided the
Bulldogs to a Top-10 Division III ranking in the National Junior College
Athletic Association in each of the last three seasons, while also
breaking the school record for wins in both 2004 (25) and 2006 (28).
Drennan has coached 11 all-region players in his four seasons, including
a pair of All-Americans in 2006.
“I am thrilled about the opportunity to take the step up from the junior
college level,” said Drennan, who at 32 becomes the second-youngest head
coach in the NJAC, a year older than Rutgers-Camden coach Brian
Wischusen. “I will work hard to carryover the success I had over the
last four seasons as a head coach.”
Drennan returns to the NJAC after serving as an assistant coach at
Ramapo College for three seasons, from 1999 through 2002. During his
time with the Roadrunners, Drennan served as the primary scouting coach
while helping guide the team to the Eastern College Athletic Conference
Metro Region Championship in 2002.
“Having coached in the NJAC as an assistant, I know how competitive the
conference is each and every night,” said Drennan. “Some of the best
players and most respected coaches in the country are in the NJAC. Every
game is a battle and it will be exciting to coach in that type of
atmosphere.”
Kean Director of Athletics Glenn Hedden welcomed Drennan to his new
professional address at Harwood Arena. “We are confident, under Sean's
guidance, that the men's basketball program will become a perennial
power in the NJAC,” said Hedden. “Sean has been around basketball all
his life, and has proven himself as a coach, both as an assistant in the
NJAC and as the head coach at Bergen Community College.”
A Health, Physical and Driver Education teacher at Snyder High School in
Jersey City, Drennan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical and
health education from Montclair State University in 1997. He is
currently attending the Management in Education Leadership Program at
New Jersey City University.
