ROWAN SELECTED AS FIELD HOCKEY FAVORITE
IN POLL OF LEAGUE'S HEAD COACHES


DEFENDING NJAC CHAMPION PROFS SEEKING THEIR SIXTH CONFERENCE CROWN


Rowan University has been selected as the favorite to win the 2006 New Jersey Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship in a preseason poll of the league’s seven head coaches. The 2005 NJAC Champion Profs will be seeking their sixth NJAC crown since 1998 and their fourth league title in the past five years.

Rowan finished the 2005 season with a 17-4 overall record and captured the NJAC title with a perfect 6-0 conference mark. The Profs garnered the league’s automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the third round before falling to eventual national champion Salisbury.

Rowan received four-of-the-seven first place votes cast by the coaches. Under the direction of ninth-year head coach Penny Kempf, Rowan has posted an overall record of 128-28. Kempf was selected as the 2005 NJAC Coach of the Year by her peers. Rowan returns a pair of all-conference midfielders from last season’s championship squad in senior Colleen McGowan and junior Susan Massara.

The College of New Jersey was selected second in the poll and received three first place votes. Led by 22nd-year head coach Sharon Pfluger, the Lions have posted a record of 374-48-5 during her tenure in Ewing. The Lions return a league-high five all-conference performers from a squad that finished the 2005 season with a 15-5 overall record and earned an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament. Included in the TCNJ all-conference returnerss are both the reigning NJAC Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in senior back Meg Hess and sophomore forward Jennifer Lubin respectively. In addition to Hess and Lubin, TCNJ returns a trio of 2005 all-league selections including senior attack players Jess Berkowitz and Allison Greene, along with junior back Sheri Grondski.

Montclair State University, which finished the 2005 season with a 17-3 overall record while earning an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament, was selected to place third. Fifth-year head coach Beth Gottung has guided the Red Hawks to an overall record of 56-21 during her tenure. Montclair returns a pair of all-conference performers from its 2005 squad including junior forward Jennifer Tanis and senor midfielder Jen Soss.

Kean University, which finished the 2005 season with a 14-6 overall record, was selected to place fourth. In 2005, the Cougars advanced to the championship game of the ECAC Tournament before falling to top-seeded Gettysburg in double overtime. Kean returns one all-conference player in senior forward Vicki Egerer. Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Dipi Bhaya, Kean has posted an overall record of 62-32.

The coaches’ dark horse selection, William Paterson University, was selected to place fifth. Led by third-year head coach Lindsay Bard, the Pioneers return one all-conference player in junior back Ashley Allison.

Ramapo College, which completed just its second season of NJAC competition in 2005, was selected to place sixth. The Roadrunners are led by fourth-year head coach Leslie LaFronz.

Richard Stockton College, which completed just its third year of NJAC competition in 2005, was selected to place seventh. Head coach Aimee Topham’s Osprey squad returns the reigning NJAC Goaltender of the Year in senior Caitlin Nolan.

NJAC league play will get underway on Wednesday, September 20 when Montclair State hosts Kean in the first conference contest of the year.

The NJAC Champion receives the conference's automatic qualification to the NCAA National Championship Tournament.
