ATTACK AND DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

TCNJ'S BERKOWITZ TAPPED AS LEAGUE'S MIDFIELDER OF THE YEAR

The New Jersey Athletic Conference announced that a league-record 32 student-athletes have earned all-conference honors in field hockey for the 2006 season. All selections were determined by a vote of the league’s seven head coaches.

Montclair State junior forward Jennifer Tanis was named the league’s Attack Player of the Year. A three-time NJAC all-conference selection and the recipient of the league’s 2004 Rookie of the Year award, Tanis currently leads the conference in points (61), goals (23), and assists (15). Her selection marks the second consecutive year that a Red Hawk has been named the league’s top attack player. Tanis and top-seeded Montclair have advanced in the ECAC Tournament and will host fourth-seeded Catholic in a semifinal game on November 11.

TCNJ senior midfielder Jess Berkowitz was named the NJAC Midfielder of the Year. A three-time NJAC all-conference selection, she currently ranks fifth in the conference in points (29), seventh in goals (11), and eighth in assists (7). Berkowitz and the NJAC Champion Lions will open play in the NCAA Tournament on November 10 when they host Elizabethtown in a second round contest.

Lion senior back Meg Hess was named the NJAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The recipient of the league’s 2003 Rookie of the Year award and a three-time all-conference selection, she currently leads a Lion defense that ranks first in the NJAC in fewest goals allowed (17).

Montclair State freshman goaltender Jacquie Supko was the recipient of the conference’s Goaltender of the Year Award. She currently ranks third in the league in goals against average (1.16) and second in the conference in save percentage (.840).

TCNJ freshman midfielder Jessica Falcone was named the NJAC Rookie of the Year. In 17 games played for the Lions, she has recorded nine goals and three assists for 21 points.

After leading TCNJ to its 20th NJAC Championship and its 26th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Lion head coach Sharon Pfluger was selected as the NJAC Coach of the Year by her peers. Now in her 22nd year at the helm of the TCNJ program, Pfluger has guided the Lions to seven national championships while posting an overall record of 390-50-5 at TCNJ. Her overall career field hockey head coaching mark currently stands at 399-69-9.
