MONTCLAIR STATE'S ANTHES NAMED CAANJ DIVISION III
MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

HONORED AT THE CAANJ LUNCHEON ON OCTOBER 17

Montclair State men's soccer All-American Bill Anthes added the final award to his senior season of 2006 as he was chosen as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey Male Student-Athlete of the Year for 2006-07. Anthes was honored at the organization's luncheon on October 17 at the Holiday Inn Somerset.

Anthes is the second Montclair State Student-Athlete in the last three years to win Athlete of the Year honors from the CAANJ. Stephanie Sabaliauskas was the recipient of the female honor in 2005.

Anthes led Montclair State to its finest season in program history in 2006. The Red Hawks finished 20-1-1 and captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference for the first time since 1989 while advancing to the NCAA Division III Sectional Tournament.

Anthes was a four-year starter for the Red Hawks who capped of his career by earning first-team All-American honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association. The NJAC leader in both goals (18) and points (40), he also was the recipient of the conference's David Logar Leadership Award which is presented to the league player who best demonstrates the attributes of leadership and courage.

Named the NJAC Male Athlete of the Year for 2006-07, Anthes became the fourth different Red Hawk in the last seven years to receive the top conference male honors joining past recipients Craig Conway (2000-01), Al Cappello (2002-03), and Gian Paul Gonzalez (2005-06). MSU Hall of Fame member Kim Wilson (1991) and Tara Wisz (1999) were selected as female recipients.

Anthes was also named the Sam Mills Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year as Montclair State in May.

Anthes, who was also named First-Team All-NJAC and First-Team All-Metro Region by the NSCAA, was a two-time NJAC Offensive Player of the Week selection and closed out his career by finishing ninth on the all-time scoring list and eighth in goals.

In addition to his excellence on the field, Anthes was also outstanding in the classroom as well earning a spot on the league's All-Academic Team. He also made contributions in the community as a member of the TALON (Teaching Athletes Leadership Opportunities Now) speaking at numerous campus programs and clinics. Among the many events Anthes participated in was the "Kicks for Kids" as the Red Hawks men’s soccer team volunteered with the Lainie’ Angels 2006 Kicks for Kids with Cancer & Blood Disorders in October at St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, NJ.
