During this period a group of scholars with expertise in the conduct of war and the organisation of the state travelled around the country, offering their advice to those rulers who were willing to pay for their services. They were the first consultants in history. Sun Tzu was one of these philosophers who offered their services to any emperor who was willing to pay. Sun Tzu is one of the few masters whose work has survived. Even today, 2,500 years later, his treatise The Art of War is still published and widely consulted. The Art of War is the first practical book on how to manage armies and conduct wars. It is also one of the few masterpieces of antiquity that you can still find in any bookshop in the world.
The managers most important or greatest responsibility is to align his interest and that of workers. In the words of Sun Tzu ‘ organisation where the purpose of the leader and his employers are united will be successful’. This means that the thoughts of every member of the organisation must align with that of the manager.
Responsiveness to the environment.
Any successful organisation must adapt to its environment in order to survive. In the words of Sun Tzu ‘ just like water must change with the terrain in other to continue flowing so an organisation must very its methods to be successful’. The manager must focus on the sector he operates in and understands what his customers want.
you as a manager must provide able and effective leadership to his employees. He must make sure his instruction is understood and obeyed. He must be ready to deal with anyone who is not ready to follow his instructions. His decision must be firm, balanced and fair.
Fluid flow of information
Information is power. As a manager, you should ensure a fluid flow of information in your organisation.’ A well-organised organisation makes managing many employees the same as managing a few’.
There are many other lessons that a manager can learn from Sun Tzu’s art of war. These are the reasons the book has remained unreliable since it was written.
