GLASSBORO–Second-seeded Kean University defeated the fourth seed The College of New Jersey, 14-1 in the championship game of the 2010 NJAC Baseball Tournament on May 9. With the victory which gave Kean its third NJAC title in program history, the Cougars also garnered the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

PITMAN--Kean University junior outfielder Nick Nolan and Rowan University junior right-hander Jeff White have been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Year respectively for the 2010 season. Their selections highlighted the 35-member 2010 NJAC baseball all-conference team that was announced on May 5. All selections were made via a vote of the league’s 10 head coaches.

NEWBERG, OR—Rutgers-Newark junior outfielder Michael Cassese has been selected as the NCAA Division III National Hitter of the Week for the third week of the 2010 season covering games of March 15-22. The selection was made by a panel of D-III members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

PITMAN--After capturing the 2009 NJAC regular season championship and advancing to its third straight NCAA Division III National Championship Series, Kean University has been selected as the 2010 preseason baseball favorite in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Cougars, who finished their 2009 campaign with an overall record of 39-11, are seeking their third conference crown since the inception of the NJAC baseball championship in 1958.

MAHWAH--The Ramapo baseball team has adopted a child through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, taking on the responsibility of giving support and friendship to a young child battling a pediatric brain tumor. On January 31, the Roadrunners officially adopted Evan Hurwitz, an eight-year old boy from Oakland, NJ, as the newest member of the Roadrunner team.

MONTCLAIR--Former Montclair State baseball coach Fred Hill will receive one of the highest honors in the Red Hawk athletic department as his No. 24 becomes just the third in school history to be retired on February 13 at the Mayfair Farms in West Orange, NJ beginning at 5:30 pm. The number retirement will be part of the baseball program’s “First-Pitch Dinner”.

UNION-- Jack McKiernan, Associate Director of Athletics at Kean University and President-Elect of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Board of Athletic Administrators, has been named as the chair of the NCAA Division III Baseball Committee.  McKiernan, who is in the midst of a four-year term, begins his one-year appointment as chair in September and is eligible for reappointment as chair for a second term.  McKiernan will oversee the committee along with NCAA staff liaison Patrick Hairston.

JERSEY CITY—Former NJCU four-year standout catcher, designated hitter, and left fielder Jonathan Thomas, a May 2005 graduate of the University with a bachelor of arts in English, was named the new head coach of the Gothic Knights baseball program. Thomas will be just the 10th head baseball coach in the 63-year history of the program.
