Omar Alston, Ramapo College Junior, Center Carteret, NJ/Carteret
Alston becomes the second different Roadrunner to earn NJAC Player of the Week honors after averaging 20.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game while leading Ramapo to three tournament victories in a five-day span to capture the 2006-07 NJAC Championship. He first tallied 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field in the Roadrunners’ 77-61 opening round victory over TCNJ. He then notched a double-double 19 points and 17 rebounds in Ramapo’s 92-84 semifinal road win at Rowan, before registering 29 points and nine rebounds in the Roadrunners’ 83-81 championship game road victory over NJCU in overtime. His jump hook with 3.8 seconds remaining in the overtime period of the championship game proved to be the winning basket as Ramapo claimed its second NJAC men’s basketball title in the past three years. As champions of the NJAC, the Roadrunners will now host York (NY) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament on March 2. A second-team all-conference selection, Alston currently leads the NJAC in field goal percentage with a mark of .588.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Deshawn Singleton, Rutgers-Newark Freshman, Forward Passaic, NJ/Passaic
Singleton earns NJAC Rookie honors for the second time this season after averaging 12.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in a pair of NJAC Tournament contests for the Scarlet Raiders. He first tallied 12 points and nine boards in Newark’s opening round 84-76 road win at Richard Stockton. He wrapped up the week by notching 12 points and eight rebounds in the Raiders’ 79-69 semifinal road loss at NJCU. After earning a selection to the ECAC Metro NY/NJ Tournament, the fourth-seeded Scarlet Raiders will host fifth-seeded Farmingdale State in a first round game on February 28. In 26 games played for Rutgers-Newark on the season, Singleton is averaging 6.7 points per game.
