MONTCLAIR--The Montclair State men’s soccer team etched its name into the NCAA records book as it won its 41st consecutive home contest shutting out Kean, 2-0 at Sprague Field on September 30.
The mark is now an All-Divisions record as MSU moved ahead of Ohio Wesleyan’s previous standard (and Division III record) of 40 set from 1991-1993. Tulsa currently holds the Division I mark at 39 from 1988 to 1992, while Cal State (L.A.) won 32 straight from 1982-1986 to claim the Division II record.
The streak began on October 25, 2005 as Montclair defeated Rutgers-Newark, 5-0 at Sprague Field in its final regular-season contest. Over the next four years, whether at MSU Soccer Park or Sprague Field, the Red Hawks have not been defeated.
During the 41-game run, MSU has outscored its opponents 138-18 with 25 of those victories coming via shutout and 23 coming against conference foes. The Red Hawks have played 11 one-goal contests in that time with two going into double overtime – a 2-1 win over NJCU that gave Montclair the 2006 NJAC title, and a 1-0 win versus Rutgers-Newark that tied Ohio Wesleyan for the mark on September 23.
Montclair’s record since the beginning of the 2006 campaign is 69-5-3, including a regular season ledger of 29-2 in NJAC play that also includes two perfect 9-0 campaigns. Montclair State is currently on a 15-game regular-season NJAC winning streak and has captured 20 overall versus league rivals, which includes four NJAC Tournament games as well as one NCAA Tournament contest.
