WPU’S NAUGLE NAMED 2001 NJAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR,

ROWAN’S UNDERCUFFLER IS PITCHER OF THE YEAR

  

            William Paterson University senior pitcher and utility player Diane Naugle (Montville HS/Montville, NJ) is the New Jersey Athletic Conference’s 2001 Player of the Year and Rowan University sophomore pitcher Julie Undercuffler (Clearview Regional HS/Mullica Hill, NJ) is the NJAC Pitcher of the Year.

            Naugle was a factor both on the mound and at the plate for the Pioneers.  Averaging 5.6 strikeouts a game with a 1.23 ERA, Naugle’s current pitching record is 13-3 as WPU heads into the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday.  Through 36 games she is batting .460, including 17 doubles, 6 home runs and 42 RBIs. Undercuffler led the Profs to the NJAC title this season on the strength of a 12-2 pitching record.  She holds a .88 ERA, averaging 4.5 strikeouts per game.

            Freshman pitching sensation Sarah O’Malley (Camden Catholic HS/Westmont, NJ) of Rutgers University-Camden is the NJAC Rookie of the Year.  O’Malley compiled a 12-8 record
and a 1.48 ERA, leading the conference with 9.7 strikeouts per game.  She was also a factor at the
plate, batting .406 for the Scarlet Raptors.

            William Paterson University head coach Hallie Cohen picked up her second Coach of the
Year award in 2000-01, having been selected field hockey coach of the year in the fall. Cohen
guided the Pioneers to a 33-7 record, best in school history, a runner-up finish in the NJAC
tournament, and a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
