TNCJ FINISHES IN TOP AT NCAA
CHAMPIONSHIP MEET |

The College of New Jersey men’s
and women’s cross
country teams were both in action at the 2001 NCAA Division III
Championships, which were hosted by Augustana College (Rock Island, IL).
TCNJ's men's and women's teams both finished in the top 10 in Division
III, while TCNJ's men's team finished in eighth place, the highest
finish by the men's program at the NCAA and the women's team took 10th
place.
On the men's side of action, the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse won the team title besting last's champion, Calvin College by 60 points. Wisconsin-LaCrosse won the crown with 80 points to Calvin's 140 points and Nebraska Wesleyan University finished in third with 193 points. The Lions took eighth place after being ranked No. 20 in a pre-tournament poll. The Lions had a team score of 271, just one point shy of taking seventh place. At the 2000 championships, TCNJ's men's team finished in 19th place. On the women's side of the competition, Middlebury College won its second straight team championship with a score of 98 points, while Williams College settled for second place with 166 points. Third place went to Moravian College with 183 points, while TCNJ picked up another top ten finish taking 10th with 323 points. At last year's championships, the Lion women finished in 15th place. TCNJ's top male finisher was sophomore Adrian Cline (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Township) as he took 38th place in 25:15. Next across the finish line for TCNJ was junior Nick Ricco (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) in 45th place in 25:26. Junior Scott McCaffery (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) took 59th place in 25:37, while junior Chris Ludwig (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) took 61st place in 25:39. Junior Chris Curto (Mt. Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) took 68th place with his performance of 25:45 to round out the team's scorers. Sophomore Brian Brach (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township) did not score for TCNJ, but took 80 th place in 25:53. TCNJ's senior Eamon O ’Brien (Paramus, NJ/Paramus), an All-American in 2000 after finishing in 29th place, took 87th place this year in 26:00.On the women ’s side of things, TCNJ was paced by sophomore Beth Vesey (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) as she took 43rd place in 18:17, while senior Karen Petouvis (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) who was an All-American in 1999, took 51st place in 18:21. As a sophomore, Petouvis finished in 31st place at the 1999 NCAA Championships and picked up her first All-America citation. Senior Julie Corbett (Kearney, NJ/Kearney) took 75th place in 18:38, just one place ahead of fellow runner, sophomore Lindsay Scarborough (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) as she was right behind her in 76th place in 18:40. Rounding out the Lions' scorers was junior Claire McGuire (Maywood, NJ/Hackensack) who finished in 78th place in 18:41. Senior Kelly Ortiz (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) did not score for the Lions, put took 113th place in 19:07, while junior Erin Cahill (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School) took 145th place in 19:48. |
